Your Bag's Interior is Chill for a Reason!
A loose stitch is absolutely not a good sign to see on your bag, but a loose interior lining is essential. That’s why the interior of your flaps is often loose (even if it seems like it’s not!)
Loose lining occurs when the interior lining of your bag is not glued or stitched to the outer body. This feature is not a flaw, as many clients think; it is actually one of the best features of your bag for several reasons:
- Flexibility: The loose leather lining can adapt to the bag’s shape without putting stress on the outer leather, helping the bag maintain its original form and structure.
- Air Circulation: A loose lining promotes better airflow, which preserves the leather’s natural properties and prevents molding, warping, or deformation over time. If you notice, mold is more common on vintage flaps with glued-in linings.
- Reduced Tension: Without glue, there’s no risk of the lining pulling or shrinking, which could distort the bag’s shape. The outer and inner layers can move slightly relative to each other, preserving the bag’s overall structure.
- Ease of Repair: A loose leather lining simplifies repairs. If any part of the bag needs servicing, the lining can be accessed without damaging or interfering with the outer structure.
