THE OCTAGON

 

THE OCTAGON. For you and me, it’s just an octagon. But for Coco Chanel, it was more and beyond. It was the rebirth, the renewal! For her, it was squaring the circle.

 

I never understood why Coco loved the octagon shape! I mean, I would understand if she was obsessed with a rhombus, star, or a half-curved C, but why a very geometrical shape with eight angles? Not for Gabrielle and definitely not for Coco Chanel.

 

Ten months forward from the above question, after plenty of digging through her biography, I am now at peace knowing that there is no other shape that can represent the Mademoiselle as much as the octagon. In fact, her middle name should have been octagon, not Albert lol.

 

The shapes are easily recognizable by the number of sides or lines they have,

 

The octagon shape is an eight-sided closed figure, this means that she admired the shape design of eight angles.

 

When you try to square the circle, it becomes a squared circle, or a more accessible word would be an octagon, lol; indeed, that’s what she did!

 

She is a revolutionary in the fashion industry! Switched the tight corset to a comfortable suit, from “only skirts allowed” to “it’s ok for women to wear trousers.”, from a handheld bag to a hand-free purse, from luxurious silk to jerseys, from expensive gold and diamonds to fashion jewelry, isn’t she a revolutionary?

 

The octagon is symbolic of renewal and rebirth. For thinking outside the box.

 

Born in 1(88)3 in August (8).

 

Opened her 31 rue Cambon in 191(8)

 

And she passed away at age (8)7.

 

Coincidence? Absolutely Yes! But that’s a lot of eights, lol

 

The octagon is present in her apartment, the design of her favorite decor piece, the mirror. In the original design of her iconic perfume lid stopper, her early bag designs, the house’s iconic premier watch, and her fav view of Place Vendôme from her Ritz suite.

 

Coco Chanel didn’t cancel the circle; she gave it a shape and dimension. She just squared the circle.
